Annual festive event Lighting Up Brentwood to take over town this Saturday!

The countdown to Christmas Day will officially begin at the weekend, as the annual Lighting Up Brentwood event is set to once again take over the town.
Brentwood Borough Council will be hosting the festive event on Saturday, November 24 from 12.30-6pm in around the High Street, starting with a Santa Parade, with the man himself being pulled on his sleigh from St Thomas’ Road to his grotto at the Sugar Hut.
Stage performances will be hosted by Churches Together in Brentwood.
The three stage areas featuring talent from the borough will be located in the following areas:
Main stage – outside Marks and Spencer
West End – outside JoJo’s Café
Choral area – at the Chapel Ruins
Throughout the day, there will be performances from choirs, soloists, schools and performing arts groups with the Christmas lights switch on by the Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Sheila Murphy and the winners of the Christmas card competition at 5pm on the main stage.
Street performances will include a range of acts, such as the Fairy Godmother on stilts, the Black Eagles acrobatic troupe from Tanzania, The Lost Reindeer, Fred the Christmas Tree and a Dickensian Ding Dong.
There will also be appearances from Captain Jack Sparrow.
Children can enjoy fun fair rides and there will be a Santa Hunt in various businesses across the High Street, Crown Street and Ropers Yard with some great prizes courtesy of Chicken and Frog Bookshop, where forms can be collected from.
The hunt will start on the day of Lighting Up and run until December 16.
Stalls will line the High Street with gifts, food and drink from local charities and businesses.
And be sure to pop into the many shops along the High Street, Crown Street and Ropers Yard to join in the many festive activities and promotions on offer.
The day is being sponsored by The Beeches Signature Care Home, Brentwood Razzamataz and Brentwood Live.
The council also wishes to say thanks to Baytree Shopping Centre, the Brentwood Business Partnership, Grace and Rose Estate Agents, St Thomas’ Church, the Conservators of Shenfield Common and A Matter Group who have sponsored the Christmas tree in the High Street.
Chairman of the community, health and housing committee, Councillor Chris Hossack said: “Lighting Up Brentwood is always a great community event and marks the start of Christmas in Brentwood.
“It is the perfect time for residents to start their shopping in the High Street and to pick up some special festive gifts.
“We have a great mix of local entertainment and activities this year to help you enjoy the event.
“And be sure to be there for the light switch on at 5pm!”
Visitors should be aware that Brentwood High Street will be closed from 7.30am to 8pm and buses will be diverted to William Hunter Way and Ingrave Road.
There is free parking at the multi-storey car park all day.
