“The BIG Sing is more than a choir: we are a family”.

These are the words of choir tutor Patricia Burrowes of the BIG Sing choir who meet every Tuesday at Hutton Free Church, Hanging Hill Lane, Hutton, to sing their hearts out.

She said: “So many members have found the choir to help them through loneliness, depression, grief, illness and have given them two hours a week to find “them” again.

“The choirs have been growing from strength to strength in number and ability, showing the members that together we CAN achieve greatness.”

The choir is for those who live in and around the borough with a love for singing, giving them the opportunity to be taught by experts and a chance to perform while helping to make sure that the choir sounds amazing.

From pop and motown, to contemporary, soul and gospel, the choir sings all kinds of music but all of the songs have uplifting and motivational lyrics.

The choir started off in just Witham seven years ago but there are now branches in areas including Rayleigh, Maldon, Chelmsford and Brentwood which currently has around 30 regular members.

Patricia says a highlight for the group this year was the Mariposa Ball which supported the Mariposa Trust, a charity for those affected by the loss of a baby, which was held at The Savoy.

BIG Sing has also set up its own charity so that its choir members can help make a difference and take what they have experienced to people who cannot join.

The charity is called The Big Sing SOUL - SOUL stands for Singing, Outreach Unity and Love.

The cause focuses on three target audiences in areas where we have already established BIG Sing Community choirs – schools, disabled groups and Hospital choirs for cancer patients and their families.

Their next main event will be its Christmas concert on December 18.

Patricia said: “People should join because not only is it a hobby that has great health and social benefits, you meet really nice people, make new friends and develop confidence.

“The BIG Sing has now grown to become a family for all ages.

“The choirs are open to everyone – you don’t need to have a fantastic singing voice – just bring your enthusiasm.

“There are no auditions – the weekly rehearsals are very relaxed but most of all fun!”
