Brentwood Theatre is giving the community its first regular cinema experience since the closure of the ABC cinema 20 years ago.

After conducting a survey in December and receiving more than 500 responses, Brentwood Theatre decided it was time to bring back the local cinema experience to the borough.

Ian Southgate, the driving force behind Brentwood Community Cinema and manager of Brentwood Theatre, said: "We love film here at Brentwood theatre and it seemed crazy to us that Brentwood has been without a cinema for so long.

"We're thrilled that Brentwood as a community seems to feel the same way and responded so positively to our survey."

The theatre will hold monthly screenings with Movie Mondays showing a mixture of classic and modern films from a wide range of genres for all ages and Family Film Sundays showing timeless classic and modern family films.

Alongside these will be Relaxed Screenings, typically for people who have autism, sensory communication disorders, learning difficulties or dementia, and Baby Screenings for parents with babes in arms.

Ian added: "The biggest responses to the survey was from people wanting to see classic films on the big screen, a chance to see family films locally and wanting to see more recent releases so we have tried to put together our first season of films to reflect this.

"Indie Films, World Cinema and Documentaries all got a look in too and we would love to screen some of these lesser known titles once we're more established."

Kicking things off for Movie Mondays on February 3 is a 1980s classic starring Harrison Ford and directed by Spielberg, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Special permission was given to screen this and it's a very rare opportunity to see the very first Indiana Jones film the way it was meant to be seen - on the big screen.

Visitors will be able to take a glass of wine or beer in with them to enjoy the film.

The first Family Film Sunday screening will be the classic Disney musical film Mary Poppins on February 23.

Brentwood Theatre added the cinema would not be possible without the support of Brentwood Borough Council through it's health and well-being strategy.
