A new minister has been ordained following the retirement of his predecessor earlier this year.

Barnabas Dong Il Shin has been ordained as the United Reformed Church (URC) minister for the pastorate of Billericay URC, Brentwood URC and Ingatestone URC.

The service was held at the Billericay United Reformed Church and was carried out by Reverend Paul Whittle, moderator of the Eastern Synod of the URC.

Deputy mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Keith Parker, and vice-chairwoman Councillor Jo Clark from Billericay Town Council were among some of the guests.

Reverend Paul Ellis, the interim moderator of the pastorate, said: “I’m pleased that the three churches have only been without a minister for three months since the Rev Ruth Mitchell’s retirement, and that, after meeting Barnabas and hearing him preach, all involved are excited at this new start.”

Since he was ordained, Rev Barnabas has taken over from Rev Mitchell’s work at the three churches.

He said: Barnabas said: “I am overjoyed at being called to be Minister at Billericay, Brentwood and Ingatestone URC churches.

“I see this as a great opportunity to nurture and grow the congregations and to engage local communities with the joy of the Christian message.”
