Guess who’s making a comeback to Brentwood for another community show?
You guessed it - it’s The One and Only singer Chesney Hawkes!
Following the huge success with two sell out performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in April 2018, legendary pop artist Chesney has kindly agreed to return to the Brentwood Centre, Doddinghurst Road, Brentwood, this June to take the leading role in GODSPELL.
The popular 90s singer said: “I am so pleased to be back at the Brentwood Centre, they made me so welcome for Joseph and it will be great to be back.
“I am so glad that Joseph was not ‘the one and only’ time I performed in Brentwood, it is such a great community to be a part of.
“The past few months have been exciting with lots of performances all around the world as well as the workshop production in London of my own new musical, Wonder, that we are planning to bring to the stage soon.
“I did not know GODSPELL when first asked but I now absolutely love it.
“The bible story is one we all know, whether or not we accept it as fact, and GODSPELL brings those stories to life.
“It tells of love, conflict and resolution between friends and the ultimate pain they have to suffer when one of their own dies.
“The sense of community and the work that (centre manager) Nicky Smith is doing through Chat 1st is so important and I look forward to supporting that.
“Our wellness and mental health is so important.”
This full production of GODSPELL, a 1970s musical that depicts the parables of St Matthew leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, will be set in a circus and will feature up to 200 community performers.
Producer Mark Reed said: “I am so excited about this new production, our director Peter Dayson has some amazing ideas.
“It is a fabulous show, written by Stephen Schwartz who went on to write Wicked!
“GODSPELL includes songs such as Beautiful City and Day by Day which I am sure many people will recognise.
“So many of us, including myself, gained from the sense of community and co-operation during Joseph last year.
“After being unwell myself for some months, my mental health rapidly improved through being part of the ensemble, and that is something that we want to build upon as part of the Brentwood Centre’s wellness scheme, Chat 1st.
“Chesney was amazing in Joseph, he went above and beyond to really build the feeling of community with the choir, and we are so pleased that he is back.
“We have over 50 people already rehearsing and it is not too late to join the company, if you are free on Saturdays between 10am and noon, please contact me.”
Director Peter Dayson added: “I am so pleased that we are bringing this show to life, I have performed in the national tour and taken it into the West End as part of my Crossover project.
“I have just finished directing two huge pantomimes and now am turning all of my attention to this extraordinary production, teaching the company circus skills from juggling to magic tricks, balloon modelling to fire breathing.
“Chesney was such a driving force behind Joseph and enabled us to put on a magnificent show, something that we hope to repeat with GODSPELL.”
GODSPELL will be performed at The Brentwood Centre on Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30, 2019.
