A consultant at the borough's NHS trust spent six hours straight running on a treadmill to not only prepare for the London Marathon but to raise more money for charity.

Colorectal consultant Matt Hanson, who works at the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, which Queen’s Hospital, Romford, comes under, raised £1,500 from the day, boosting his overall total to more than £5,000.

Colleagues, patients and visitors rewarded his efforts as he ran well over the equivalent distance of a marathon in the atrium at Queen’s Hospital last week.

The money will go towards the King George and Queen’s Hospitals charity and will be spent on improving the trust’s bowel cancer service.

He said: “A huge thank you to everyone who supported me on the day, as well as those who have supported my other efforts and sponsored me online.

“This allows me to bring together my two passions, my love of running and passion for my role, therefore I’m really excited to be taking part in such an iconic event.”
